On Tuesday, February 18th, the Governor delivered his budget address.

The proposed budget spends $118.9 billion over two years, a 20% increase over the last budget. It adds 880 new positions to state government and raises taxes by $2.3 billion during the two-year biennium. The proposed budget is a total of 1,917 pages long, a stark contrast to our 183-page budget from last session.

*** SEE UPDATES BELOW THESE DETAILS ***

I just re-submitted a formal complaint to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission after research revealed potentially thousands of violations of ethics laws by state Representative Steve Doyle tied to his work as a private attorney providing legal services directly to state lobbying organizations, something that state ethics law prohibits.

Blistering Audit of MPS

The audit’s findings are a blistering testament to MPS's gross mismanagement of resources, the educational hardship and struggles faced by Milwaukee students, and the blind eye turned by DPI under Jill Underly.

Restoring public trust in the state’s largest district is crucial. I applaud Governor Evers for taking swift action to order this audit which Superintendent Underly should have done months ago. With the achievement gap growing annually in Wisconsin and only five percent of Black students proficient in reading, a plan to fix MPS’s institutional failures is long overdue.

Milwaukee Public Schools Need to Clean Up their Act

A tax-payer funded audit commissioned by Gov. Evers just concluded, and it revealed what we already know - Milwaukee Public Schools are ineffective and resistant to change, further failing our students. MPS is a free-for-all that is "not positioned to support schools in ensuring student success" while administrators and board members fail to act. For too long, MPS has played by different rules with absolutely no accountability. They have lost all trust from the public and it's time for Gov. Evers and the Department of Public Institution to take this issue seriously.

There is a statewide election this Tuesday, February 18. Every voter in Wisconsin will have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidate for Superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Voters can only vote for one candidate. The top two vote-getters will move on to the general election on April 1.

Some communities may also have primaries for races such as mayor, city council, school board, or others. We'd like to encourage you to find out what is on your ballot before you go to the polls. You can see your sample ballot at myvote.wi.gov.

The Fifty-first State?

Current chatter would have you believe that President Trump wants Canada to become the fifty-first state. I hate to argue with the President, but that doesn’t pass the common sense test. First, looking at land mass, Canada is the second largest country in the world (after Russia) so making that a state is questionable at best. Then, Canada is already divided into ten provinces and three territories, so why not add ten states and three territories?

The first subpoena I issued as the new chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations was to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for records relating to COVID-19 vaccine safety data and communications about the COVID-19 pandemic, including Dr. Anthony Fauci’s emails.

In case you missed it, I joined Sherwin Hughes yesterday on 101.7 The Truth!

I hope you’ll take a listen and share with your networks. Our current Superintendent at DPI has failed our kids, and our children deserve SO MUCH better. I am ready to take on the challenge, and make sure we can get our Wisconsin kids back to reading, writing, and doing math!

If you haven’t already early voted, please make a plan and get your friends and family out to the polls on or before the Spring Primary Election on February 18!
