Milwaukee Public Schools Need to Clean Up their Act

A tax-payer funded audit commissioned by Gov. Evers just concluded, and it revealed what we already know - Milwaukee Public Schools are ineffective and resistant to change, further failing our students. MPS is a free-for-all that is "not positioned to support schools in ensuring student success" while administrators and board members fail to act. For too long, MPS has played by different rules with absolutely no accountability. They have lost all trust from the public and it's time for Gov. Evers and the Department of Public Institution to take this issue seriously. The blame-game happening with the Democrats and DPI is leaving our children behind and unprepared for a successful future.

Some important MPS stats:

  • 51% of students are considered chronically absent
  • The district's graduation rate is 76% compared to 94% statewide
  • Only 9% of 4th grade students were considered proficient in reading when compared to the statewide average of 31%

The findings from the audit were alarming. Administrators are making up their job responsibilities on the fly, there is a major issue with internal communication, the data collection is outdated which leads to massive errors, and they are financially inept. Republicans have been working on a package of education reform bills that put our students first and prioritize student success in the classroom. These bills will be brought to the floor next week for a vote. We hope Gov. Evers does the right thing by signing this legislation. Taxpayers shouldn't be footing a $5.5 million bill to tell the largest district in the state that they need to prioritize the students they exist to serve.
