The Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) met twice this past week, completing our work on twelve more state agencies. One of the most important areas we focused on was education, which continues to be the largest expenditure in our state budget.
The National Fatherhood Initiative notes that “[f]ather involvement provides numerous benefits for child well-being, starting prenatally and lasting into adulthood. Engaged fathers enhance cognitive skills, reading proficiency, and self-esteem, while reducing risks of poor birth outcomes, poverty, food insecurity, and behavioral issues.” The group encourages communities wanting to make the largest impact on families to start with a focus on dads and increasing their involvement in their children’s lives.
Ever since the college protest marches in the Spring of 24, I have been disdainfully watchful. The recent reporting of a quote, carried forth by Guy Benson, has overridden any tolerance that I have left:
"Hamas supporters are not only burning American flags in our streets. they are now burning Americans in our streets.".
All week, I’ve been watching the chaos unfold in Los Angeles—and while media outlets toss around vague terms like “riots” and “unrest,” no one is speaking plainly about what this really is. So let me do it for them.

In case you missed it: Over the course of the last few weeks, Senate and Assembly Republicans have engaged with Governor Evers and his staff in negotiations with the goal of reaching bipartisan agreement in major areas of the state budget. In the budget crafted two years ago, Governor Evers vetoed our tax cut and kept all the spending. Our hope this time would be that via negotiation, middle class tax relief would avoid a veto.
The failure of Gov. Evers and legislative leaders to come to an agreement on a budget that prioritizes taxpayers and institutes necessary reforms is unfortunate but unsurprising. There has been a tremendous lack of leadership in the Capitol for some time, and the bottom line is it's not working. Now is an opportunity for conservatives on the legislative Joint Finance Committee to develop a responsible budget that puts taxpayers first.
At the MacIver Institute, we've been urging the adoption of budget reforms for years. Here are some suggestions for conservatives to consider:
On May 21, I held my first hearing as chairman of the powerful U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI).
