Inauguration Day was a good day for America. Watching Donald Trump take the oath of office becoming the 47th President of the United States was an honor. It is time to not only make America great again, but make it even better after four years of disastrous Democratic policies.
Last week, in the Republican response to Governor Evers' State of the State Speech, I outlined Republican priorities, including ensuring our kids are properly taught to read in school. You may remember I mentioned that the Department of Public Instruction was lowering standards to make it look like kids were doing better than they were, and that our plan would be to tie state scores to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) exam to maintain a steady baseline that made it possible to assess year-over-year progress or decline in our reading scores without using funny math.
“A penny saved is a penny earned” is a well-known quotation often attributed to Benjamin Franklin. He reportedly never said that, but instead wrote in his 1737 Poor Richard’s Almanac “A penny saved is a two pence clear”. As a kid many decades ago, I heard “A penny saved is a penny earned” many times. It was probably my first lesson in Economics long before I had any idea about the definition of economics!
I’ve written about this issue many times, but the people of northern and western Wisconsin don’t need me to tell them how bad the gray wolf problem has become – you already know.
We’ve all seen the consequences of failing to manage the gray wolf population.
For the third consecutive year, wolf attacks have increased in Wisconsin, with many occurring in the Seventh District.
Wisconsin farmers, sportsmen, and pet owners have seen enough evidence to know that it is their livelihood that’s endangered, not the gray wolf.
In studying 'An Economic History of the United States', Dr John T Schlebecker. taught me about the pendulum theory. He said the pendulum theory is wrong because it only accounts for back and forth. He said economic history is more like a corkscrew because as you travel the corkscrew, it does move from left to right, then right to left. But it also proceeds. The economic corkscrews are not symmetrical. Sometimes there are small corkscrews within the corkscrew.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to protect children under the age of 19 from gender transitions, stating: “It is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.” The Order cites the risks of chemical and surgical mutilation, such as puberty blockers and any so-called “gender-affirming care” procedures.
The Ag Economic Outlook Forum took place at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. This event is hosted by UW-Madison’s Renk Agribusiness Institute, and I look forward to it every year. It is a great opportunity to hear from ag economists and industry insiders as they share their forecasts of what the upcoming year will bring.
