The State of the State Address and Republican Response

Tuesday night, Governor Evers delivered his State of the State address to a joint session of the legislature. As a quick recap, his top priorities were exactly what we imagined they would be – to spend unsustainably, grow the size of government, and give more handouts.

Republicans will not let that happen! It's due to the good decisions made by my Republican colleagues over the past decade that we have a record surplus and ample revenues to address the issues facing our state.

National School Choice week

I wanted to take a moment to commemorate National School Choice week and share the substack I wrote last year in the heat of my re-election campaign:

Well before becoming a U.S. Senator, I was involved as a volunteer in improving both the private and public education systems in Oshkosh. First as a member of the President’s Advisory Council for Lourdes High School, then as Chairmen of its Building Expansion Committee, and finally as a member of the Oshkosh Chamber’s Partners in Education (PIE) Council.

Educational Freedom Upholds Parents’ Rights and Allows Students to Thrive

With so many schools across the country engaging in activism and radical indoctrination, school choice is more important than ever. In Wisconsin, the Madison Metropolitan School District is introducing this week a “gender identity and sexual orientation curriculum.” Students will learn about “different identities, which include gender identity, sex assigned at birth, and sexual orientation,” according to an email sent to parents last week.

Parents must be able to protect their children from these dangerous lies and ideas, and school choice allows them to do so.

On January 3, I took the oath of office for my third term as senator.

I'm honored to keep serving Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate. I take the oath seriously, and will continue to fight for freedom and the truth.

I appreciate House conservatives pressing for common sense reforms, function and fiscal sanity -- and then taking yes for an answer.

Legislature presents question directly to WI voters

The Assembly was on the floor Thursday and tackled two major things:

1. A constitutional amendment on bail reform
2. An advisory ballot referendum on welfare requirements

The bail reform amendment allows courts to consider more relevant factors when setting bail for violent criminals. It strikes a balance between presuming innocence, public safety, and ensuring our judges have the appropriate tools to deal with repeat violent offenders.

I have long argued for the need to fix Wisconsin’s broken bail system. Five years ago, I served on a Legislative Council Study Committee that looked at bail, and I am gratified we will finally have a chance to make some needed changes to our Wisconsin Constitution. The law needs to make clear that dangerous people accused of serious crimes need to be locked up—period. Public safety must be paramount in all bail decisions.

Wisconsin Family Action: Responds to FBI reward for attack on its office

MADISON – The FBI today announced a $25,000 reward for “information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction” of person(s) involved in at least 78 attacks on pro-life organizations since the leak of the Dobbs decision occurred last May. This announcement came shortly after a private investigation was launched by a network of pro-life organization.

Lowest tax burden ever recorded

Wisconsin Policy Forum recently released a report on the state and local tax burden falling to the lowest level ever recorded. (The WI Policy Forum has been tracking the tax burden since 1970.)

State and local tax revenues fell as a share of personal income in Wisconsin to just under 10.1% in 2022, down from 10.3% in 2021.
Since 2011, Legislative Republicans have led the way, cutting state and local taxes by over $22 billion during the 12-year period.

First Bills Proposed

This week, I proposed two congressional amendments and one bill – delivering on my promise to enact real change in Washington and marking my first legislation introduced as a Member of Congress.

We need smaller government, not more debt to pay for more government overreach–and we need more elected officials who feel called to serve the People, not enrich themselves. My bills will stop forcing taxpayers to pay for bigger government and close the revolving door between the Capitol and K Street.
