Insights from former State Senator Dan Kapanke
In 2011, Wisconsin was facing a $3.6 Billion Dollar budget deficit. Wisconsin's State Constitution requires that only a balanced budget can be enacted. This was a tall order for the new governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker.
Governor Walker proposed Act 10, a massive budget deficit-cutting piece of legislation. Republican legislators passed Act 10 in March of 2011, but it wasn't easy. It was a VERY difficult process.
Some Republican legislators faced recall elections a year after Act 10 was enacted. Some legislators survived their recall election.
Senator Dan Kapanke did not. He was defeated in his recall election.
Dan has very unique insights regarding the Act 10 battle. Actually, it wasn't just a battle.
It was a WAR.
Act 10 is still on Wisconsin's law books today, but once again, it is before the Wisconsin State Supreme Court. Act 10 has been upheld many times since 2011, but this time, the threat of it being struck down is very real.
Dan will be speaking about his experience as a Wisconsin State Senator who voted "Yes" on Act 10.
Come to La Crosse to hear Dan speak about his experiences during this time. Dan has many insights into what actually happened when Act 10 was passed, why it was passed, and how it impacts the lives of Wisconsin citizens today.
