Anyone Can Be President in America

A friend called me and told me about a book she was reading, A Hillbilly Elegy. We talked for a long time and then I got many follow up calls about the book and the similarities to a friend of ours. It started out with a young person in a very difficult childhood, a very unstable family, that involved drug addiction, failed marriage and relationships. This book is the young life of J.D. Vance. He spent most of his young life with his Grandmother, she was a poor hillbilly who had some family standards and she generally was a good person with some street smarts. She loved America, and she loved God, and that kept her on constant struggle but a direction that gave J.D a guide for success.

It did not come easy, JD had his father who was a decent man and offered stability, and was a good example. Vance did not ever move in permanently with him, and never makes clear why, but I suspect he had a need to keep an eye on his Grandmother and mother who needed help. His mother did not deserve his help, but it might be that blood is thicker than water, something in human nature I think.

J.D Vance was very poor, had no white privilege, ashamed of his family, but would not tell anyone his story as a young boy. He worked at low pay jobs to help himself and even his family, he learned about what poor and well off people did to get by, and how parts of the American welfare system failed most.

I did not read the book but had the important parts told to me and we discussed it in detail, JD Vance could have been a drug using confused person, but likely because of his Grandmother he had enough guidance to search for what could fix his difficult life, and with a nudge from a Marine friend he enlisted in the U. S. Marines, and played by the rules. That he said gave him perspective and guidance to succeed and thrive. J.D. Vance is the American Dream, at the highest level of anyone I can think of. I believe he will be President someday, and help MAGA!

This morning after church my wife was chatting with the ladies, and she saw one of them had a paperback copy of this book. It seems they are passing it around and have a list of others who want to read it. I have heard different claims about what a person can accomplish in America. Still, I believe it has been over 100 years since anyone moved out of poverty to become president, and now maybe it could happen again. But I think I will say only in America!
