Goodbye D.E.I.

D.E.I. – as in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – has been the buzz-word term in academia and commerce the past few years. Some say the origins come from The Civil Rights Act of 1964 which President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law. This law prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Diversity brings together people of different backgrounds and experiences, equity tries to level the playing field for all concerned, and inclusion gives everyone “ownership”. DEI is often recognized for its commitment to fairness and representation.

Earlier this week, I received the incredible honor of being named the Senate vice-chair of the powerful Joint Finance Committee.

The Joint Finance Committee is responsible for determining all state appropriations and expenditures, including the biennial budget. I was first appointed as a member of the committee in 2022.

As Senate vice-chair of JFC, I will be more heavily involved in the negotiation process when putting together our state’s two-year spending plan and deciding what to do with our projected $4.6 billion budget surplus.

Illegal Abortions via Telehealth

Wisconsin law prohibits the use of telehealth for abortion services, but Wisconsin Public Radio reports that a new study shows a number of Wisconsinites are receiving abortion medication from other states. Data from the organization WeCount showed an average of about 130 orders for abortion medication being shipped to Wisconsin from providers in other states each month from last September to this June. Assuming all of the orders resulted in completed abortions, this could constitute about one-quarter of total abortions in the state.

The Biden administration’s failure to secure our borders has flooded the country with over 10 million illegal aliens and fueled one of the largest human trafficking operations in history.

What’s worse? They show no regret.

During a House Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee hearing this week, I questioned President Biden’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director about her role in this crisis.

Instead of admitting they could have done better, she said she was “proud” of their efforts.

Whatever Happened to… EMR Certification Reform?

This year in Wisconsin, we have seen a spike in Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certifications compared to past years. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) there were 442 EMRs initially certified in Wisconsin in 2023. Through November 20, 2024 we had already seen 882 EMRs initially certified this year! These numbers are great as each certification awarded is another volunteer helping our local EMS departments. But what caused this change?
