This evening, the Assembly approved the state budget, which will cut taxes in Wisconsin by an astounding $4.4 billion, $3.5 billion devoted solely to income tax relief. The budget will also provide increased funding for education and overhaul the way we teach children how to read.

Last week, I spoke in an Agriculture Committee hearing about the digital divide in rural America.

UW-Madison estimates that just 63 percent of households in rural Wisconsin counties have broadband access, yet Washington politicians have been all talk and no action on the issue. As I noted in the hearing, we have spent $351 billion the last five years, but we can’t do precision agriculture going from Crawford to Grant County. This is a systemic failure of this system.

Recent data highlights a concerning decline in literacy and math achievements within the American public education system.

Based on a recent assessment of national trends, the average scores in math and reading tests for 13-year-olds in the United States have plummeted to their lowest point in several decades. Officials at the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) acknowledge that COVID has played a role in this decline in educational performance. It's likely that increased instructional time spent on "woke" ideology is also to blame.

Wisconsin is facing a literacy crisis, and our schools need help improving literacy rates. Standardized test scores in Wisconsin show that 64% of fourth-graders are not proficient in reading. Studies have shown that children who don’t learn to read struggle later in life and are more likely to end up in prison or on welfare. This week the legislature made concrete steps towards addressing the reading crisis throughout the state of Wisconsin, passing Assembly Bill 321, the Right to Read Act.

I and 15 bipartisan cosponsors introduced the Warrior Call Day Resolution, which will designate November 12, 2023 as National Warrior Call Day. This would encourage all Americans, especially active-duty and retired servicemembers, to contact someone who has worn or is currently wearing the uniform and connect struggling veterans with mental health services.

The United States is a nation in decline. It has gone downhill precipitously in just the last few years. Our nation’s enemies like Communist China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and others are delighted at what has befallen this once greater nation. In fact it is a sure bet that most of our foes have happily played an active role in helping to orchestrate our demise.
