Over the past month, we’ve shared how important fathers are to the family unit and how society is determined to undermine that role. But what exactly are the tangible benefits that fathers provide? The Institute for Family Studies created an insightful list based on respected bodies of research that show the immediate and long-term impact fathers have on all members of the family unit.

Benefits to the family:

  • Higher levels of family income
  • Reduced risks of poverty
  • Increased time flexibility

Benefits to the kids:

  • Reduced rates of prematurity and infant mortality
  • Less crying as newborns
  • Fewer academic challenges
  • Reduced risk-taking behavior and delinquency in adolescence
  • Fewer behavioral challenges
  • Fewer mental health challenges
  • Increased physical activity levels
  • Less substance abuse
  • Better social functioning and fewer romantic relationship problems
  • Reduced risk of early sexual experiences and teen pregnancy
  • Increased earning potential as adults

Benefits to Mom:

  • Fewer health problems as mothers
  • Ability to offer higher-quality parenting
  • More time for leisure activities
  • Increased mental and emotional well-being

Benefits to Dad:

  • Greater engagement in service organizations
  • Improved diet and physical activity
  • Decreased risky behaviors
  • Decreased alcohol use
  • Strengthened intergenerational family ties

The length of this list emphasizes just how crucial and beneficial the role of fatherhood is to the family. When our fallen culture tries to tell us otherwise, we know the truth: God created man and woman to join together in marriage (a representation of Christ and the Church) and procreate, raising children under the banner of their union (a representation of God the Father and His children). Both fathers and mothers are essential to the proper functioning of a family, and although God gives grace and ability to single parents, we know that His perfect design is for children to be raised by a married mother and father.

This concept, absolutely central to the Biblical worldview, is under constant attack in our culture through songs, movies, books, social media, etc. Everywhere we turn, there is a very intentional campaign being waged against traditional values and the Biblical worldview. The necessity of fathers in the family is one of them.

As Wisconsin Family Action continues to challenge this narrative and support fathers, will you prayerfully consider donating to our work through our $25,000 in 2025 Match campaign? This is your final chance to contribute!
