National Travel and Tourism Week is May 3-9. This is a great opportunity to recognize the vital role tourism plays in Wisconsin’s economy and to start planning your next Wisconsin getaway today.

Here in the 17th Senate District, we have no shortage of reasons for visitors to stop by. From scenic landscapes and beautiful drives, to agritourism, unique stores, outdoor recreation, and a vibrant arts scene, our region offers something for everyone. Our position on Wisconsin’s border makes it a short drive for visitors from Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Wisconsin has built a strong reputation as a tourism destination. From the Great River Road to Door County, and everywhere in between, tourism is an important driver of our economy. In addition, Wisconsin has been able to host several major events in recent years such as the NFL Draft, golf tournaments, music festivals, and political conventions. In 2024, our state welcomed a record 114.4 million visitors, many from neighboring states. That strong turnout generated more than $3 billion in economic impact, supported over 22,000 jobs, and produced more than $200 million in state and local taxes across the counties in the 17th Senate District.

Our most recent state budget builds on the success we are already seeing. We used one-time funding to bolster the Department of Tourism’s marketing efforts to continue attracting visitors, while also supporting the restoration and expansion of Taliesin, a cornerstone destination in southwestern Wisconsin. We made the Office of Outdoor Recreation permanent to support activities like ATV/UTV riding and snowmobiling, and I also passed legislation to install signage officially designating the Mississippi River Trail bike path along the Great River Road.

Wisconsin’s booming tourism economy is great for local governments across the state. Thanks to the shared revenue package passed last session, increases in state sales tax revenue are returned to local governments. As tourism drives economic activity, communities across Wisconsin see the benefits through improved public safety and better roads.

As we celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week, I encourage you to take time to explore everything Wisconsin has to offer. Whether you go across the state or explore your own backyard, supporting tourism helps our small businesses and our communities all across the state.
