Providing Transparency on Taxpayer Dollars

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Veterans’ Administration allocated nearly $11 million intended for recruitment and retention of VA employees that assist in processing veterans’ benefits claims to instead award bonuses to senior executives. 90% of all VA employees, including the intended recipients, were left out of receiving any of these funds.

The government waste and misuse of taxpayer dollars that occurred within the VA is wholly unacceptable and shameful. Unfortunately, if it can happen at VA, it can happen at any other federal agency. I refuse to allow this to occur.

Oversight on the use of taxpayer dollars is not optional – it is a necessity. That is why I joined my colleague Congressman Flood in introducing the BONUS Transparency Act. This bill requires that all bonuses awarded to Senior Executive Service (SES) employees must be reported to Congress, including the employee’s name, job title, and annual rate of pay. Additionally, federal agencies must disclose the accounts from which the performance awards were funded.

It’s time we draw a clear line to ensure that federal agencies are held to the highest standard and any misuse of funds is fully exposed.

The farther you get away from private enterprise, the closer you get to mediocracy. The reward is not usually based on productivity, it is based on showing up and filling the space. Government employees get paid if they do a good job or a poor job, often they suck up to the supervisor as that is the only real incentive they have. Some are great employees, and they struggle in government employment, it is hard to improve overall quality without stepping on someone's toes.
