Judge Maria Lazar is clearly my choice to be the next Justice elected to Wisconsin’s Supreme Court in the April 7th election. Independent, impartial, and informed are good descriptions of Judge Lazar; and you can add integrity and initiative to that list too. I have personally met Judge Lazar on four occasions while she has been campaigning in the Coulee Region and I appreciate her character; her attitude and aptitude.

Judge Lazar has the experience to include almost 20 years in private practice, 5 years as Assistant Attorney General, and 10 years as a judge (Waukesha County and State Appeals Court) to give her the credentials for being a successful Supreme Court Justice. Judge Lazar is a Wisconsin native and completed her undergraduate studies in Wisconsin. Her experience as an Assistant AG gives her valuable prosecutor experience.

Compare that to her opponent who was raised in California, did her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania – an east coast Ivy League college – and served several years representing Madison as a Democrat in the State Assembly. She also has been an executive with Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

In comparison Judge Lazar has always been elected to her judicial positions while her opponent started her judicial career with a political appointment from Gov. Evers. Judge Lazar has prosecution experience while her opponent has political experience. And, Judge Lazar has about twice the bench time as a judge than her opponent.

With the current division of four liberal leaning and three conservative minded justices on the Supreme Court it is important to elect a conservative to replace the retiring Justice Bradley. It is extremely important when you consider that it takes the vote of three Justices to bring a case before the court; and if the split is 5 – 2 issues important to conservatives may not be considered for a long time!

About nine months ago the United States Supreme Court unanimously overturned the Wisconsin Supreme Court in a religious liberty case One new justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court may not have changed the results, but one inquiring justice that believes in the Rule of Law and stands by the Constitution may have changed the debate and maybe the results. Several of the sitting Justices have endorsed Judge Lazar’s opponent so that raises questions. We don’t need a potential rubber stamp, but a fresh face willing to ask the tough questions!

Another reason for a rock-solid Constitutionalist on the Supreme Court is the recently filed law suit on behalf of Wisconsin PTA, several Wisconsin School Districts, multiple teachers’ unions, individual parents, educators and students, and the Wisconsin Public Education Network, alleging that the Wisconsin Legislature has failed to adequately fund public schools. The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty has called this lawsuit “an assault on democracy, seeking to install rule by judges rather than by the governor and legislature.” (None of the school districts are in the Coulee Region.)

I received a letter from her opponent’s campaign manager. What it said, and what it didn’t say, is noteworthy but I guess that is politics in contemporary America. It said “Defeat the billionaires” but failed to mention a $750,000 contribution from George Soros. It said her candidate is “the candidate who will protect our rights” but failed to mention as a state legislator, her candidate voted against Marcy’s Law not once but twice! I did agree with the banner on the envelope “We’re running the most important campaign in the country” but we probably have different reasons for making the statement!

Judge Lazar has said “Time to restore justice and impartiality to our courts” and “When courts become political, justice becomes conditional.” Compare that to her opponent wanting to “restore Driver’s Licenses to non-citizens”, “include immigration as a protected status”, and “make illegal aliens eligible for in-state tuition at Wisconsin taxpayer funded universities”.
