Survey: UW students afraid to express views
The University of Wisconsin campuses conducted a survey about free speech, and the results show a very different college experience based on students' political beliefs. Around 10,500 students across 13 campuses responded.
Republican and right-leaning students report they're silenced, pressured to agree with instructors, and face unwelcoming environments. Liberal and left-leaning students however have a much friendlier college experience.
Most conservative students said they’re afraid to express their views on controversial topics in class because they fear other students won’t agree or it could hurt their grades,
A third of all respondents said they’ve felt pressure from an instructor to agree with a certain viewpoint. Conservative students report instructors stifle them in the classroom and made them uncomfortable when expressing their views.
And only about a third of the students said they'd been taught at least something about the First Amendment, which guarantees free speech, in their classes.
The survey revealed a depth of intolerance among many students. Left-leaning students are far more comfortable expressing their views, whereas nearly 70% of right-leaning students are not comfortable and report receiving much worse treatment. This is an institutional failure. College should be a place that allows for a free flow of ideas and diverse viewpoints.
Republicans have been calling for this survey for years so that our universities would finally see the truth. Sadly the results are not surprising, especially in these recent times when campuses are indoctrinating our students with a liberal agenda while not allowing conservative views to be expressed.
Republicans have always advocated for free speech on campus and will continue to push for more transparency and political balance.
UW-Madison law professor Ryan Owens has a concise summary of the results that can be viewed here, and you can see the full UW Systems report here.

This is a huge issue, and needs addressing.
All of us at times have had to offer less than a full honest response, out of political correctness or fear. It is simply disgraceful, that our government schools push a liberal agenda, and bully our students.
I don't know where our young people can get a sustainable conservative perspective, once they leave home, but they will pay dearly with this failed system they are being taught.
