Life at Conception Act of 2017
In January of this year bills were introduced in both houses of Congress called the “Life at Conception Act of 2017”. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced S.231 with 8 co-sponsors. Rep. Alex X. Mooney (R-WV 8th) introduced HR.681 with 57 co-sponsors to include Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI 6), the only co-sponsor from Wisconsin in either house of Congress. One more Senator and 3 more Representatives have since joined as co-sponsors.
As introduced in Congress, this bill is “To implement equal protection under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States for the right to life of each born and pre-born human person.” The definitions section of this bill states “The terms ‘human person’ and ‘human being’ include each member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization or cloning, or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.” Also of significance the bill states “Nothing in this Act shall be construed to require the prosecution of any women for the death of her unborn child, a prohibition on in vitro fertilization, or a prohibition on use of birth control or another means of preventing fertilization.”
Another similar bill was introduced in the House of Representatives in January. HR.586, “Sanctity of Human Life Act”, with 29 co-sponsors is related, but should not be construed as the same act.
The significance of the Life at Conception Act of 2017 is when passed and signed into law it will overturn the famous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court Case of 1973. The Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade failed to establish when life begins, and further admitted that if this suggestion of personhood is established the entire case will be seen differently as the fetus’ right to life will then be guaranteed by the 14th Amendment.
Because of Roe v. Wade, more than 61 million unborn children have died through abortion. The Life at Conception Act, by establishing that life begins at conception, will give Constitutional rights to the unborn and will save millions of children from death by abortion.
Communicate with Senator Johnson, Senator Baldwin, and Representative Kind (or your own US Senators and Representative) and ask them to co-sponsor the Life at Conception Act of 2017, to do what is needed to bring it to a final vote, and to vote for passage of this Act. Then, ask your family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. Finally, write a letter to the editor alerting others to the Life at Conception Act of 2017.
