Honoring the Trades This Labor Day

As we celebrate Labor Day and soak up the final days of summer, I want to take a moment to highlight the hardworking individuals in the 17th Senate District who work in the trades. The work that our electricians, welders, carpenters, HVAC technicians, mechanics, plumbers, and operating engineers do is absolutely essential to moving our community and economy forward.

Too often, the trades are thought of as a backup plan, what you do if college does not work out. That thinking needs to change. The trades offer what many other career paths do not: strong wages, numerous employment opportunities, and the pride of building something tangible. Despite these advantages, there is still a workforce shortage across nearly every field in the trades. This means tremendous opportunities are available for young people who are willing to learn a skill and show up for work.

Today more and more students are looking to the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) and apprenticeships for shorter, more affordable paths to start a career. Wisconsin’s popular Youth Apprenticeship Program, which gives high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to prepare for a career while still in school, has grown dramatically, from 3,000 participants a decade ago, to more than 11,000 this past school year.

Recognizing the importance of preparing students for careers in the trades, we made meaningful investments in WTCS and workforce development. In the state budget, we increased funding for youth apprenticeships and expanded support for technical colleges so they can continue to train tomorrow’s workforce affordably and effectively. These investments give students a head start in their careers, while helping local employers build a more prepared and reliable workforce.

This Labor Day, I wanted to dedicate this column to the workers who build, repair, and power our communities. We need to continue to support the next generation who will carry on these essential roles. Because when our skilled workforce succeeds, our communities thrive.
