Enshrining Voter ID In Our Constitution

It is my priority to make sure voting in Wisconsin is easy and secure. This week, we advanced a constitutional amendment to do just that. On your ballot in April, you will now see a question asking to enshrine Wisconsin’s voter ID requirement in our state constitution. A “yes” vote strengthens Wisconsin’s existing statutory requirement and protects it against removal by a future legislature or an activist judiciary.

Democrats were quick to criticize our actions during the debate on the Assembly floor. Members on the other side of the aisle called the amendment racist, unpopular, and an effort to suppress voter turnout. These accusations couldn’t be further from the truth. Voter ID is incredibly popular. Multiple polls have found that over 80% of the public supports a requirement to provide photo ID along with 56% of Democrats and 84% of nonwhite voters. Accusations that the law suppresses votes also have no basis. Voter turnout in Wisconsin has increased since the initial passage of the requirement.

Obtaining a photo ID in Wisconsin is not only free, it is also easy. Even our Democratic Governor Agrees. In the years following adoption of this measure, Governor Evers has taken to Twitter (X) to express how easy it really is. In October of 2018 he wrote, “Stopped by the DMV this morning to pick up my new photo ID! It was easy and only took a few minutes.” And in April of 2019 he reminded us, “It’s time to go vote, Wisconsin! And boy, is it easy.”

I’m excited to have the opportunity to vote “Yes” on this constitutional amendment in the April election to protect this important election security measure for generations to come. I ask that you join me in supporting the amendment.

If you would like to watch my entire floor speech on the amendment, I’ve included a video below:
