Stay Safe While Enjoying Wisconsin’s Natural Beauty
I am fortunate to represent one of the most beautiful parts of our state. That is especially clear to me each fall. As the leaves begin to change, my drives through southern and southwestern Wisconsin become even more scenic.
This time of year, I keep a close eye on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s Fall Color Report. This website offers up-to-date information on peak fall colors across the state along with suggestions for the best places to take in a great view or snap a picture.
As you are out enjoying the fall colors, please remember that autumn brings its own set of driving challenges.
Farm equipment on the roads become much more prevalent in fall. As harvest season ramps up, you will likely encounter more farm equipment. It is important to remember that passing farm equipment in a no passing zone is illegal, regardless of how slowly it is moving. You must wait until you see a broken center line or a designated passing lane before passing.
You will also notice school buses back on the roads, taking children to and from school. If you see a school bus with red flashing lights, you must stop at least 20 feet from the bus so that the children aboard may safely board or exit the bus.
I also wanted to remind you of two more traffic laws that are often overlooked. Wisconsin has a “move over” law that requires drivers to move over one lane when approaching a vehicle that is pulled over on the side of the road with flashing lights. This includes law enforcement, highway maintenance, or cars pulled over with their hazards on. Finally, a reminder that it is state law that if your wipers are on, you must also have your headlights on. Too often, I see drivers in low-visibility conditions without their lights on, creating unsafe conditions for themselves and others.
And of course, since deer are more active in the fall, especially at dusk and dawn, I must remind you to watch out for deer! In the next few weeks, we will be in peak “season” for car and deer crashes.
As we transition to a new season, I hope you take time to slow down and enjoy everything fall has to offer. Just make sure you do it with safety at the top of your mind.
