Working for Our Servicemembers and Veterans

When I was appointed to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, I promised to be an advocate for our servicemen and women. Specifically, as Chairman of the Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, I’m committed to improving the access and delivery of their benefits including housing, postsecondary education, and job training and employment.

I’ve recently introduced multiple pieces of legislation to expand opportunities for our Active Duty servicemembers, Reservists, National Guardsmen, and veterans:

Two Bills Passed by State Senate

I am proud that the Wisconsin State Senate passed two of my bills during this week’s floor session.

The first, SB 925, bans the sale of counterfeit and unsafe lighters in Wisconsin.

China and other countries have been exporting counterfeit and unsafe lighters into the United States for decades. These unregulated devices have led to thousands of injuries, billions of dollars in property damage, enormous healthcare costs and – unfortunately – death. With the rise of online shopping options, it is now easier and cheaper than ever to purchase knock-off lighters.

WILL Secures Victory Against Racial Discrimination

Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) has achieved a historic legal victory against the Biden Administration. U.S. District Judge Mark T. Pittman ruled the racially discriminatory federal laws creating the Minority Business Development Agency are unconstitutional. Specifically, the agency's practice of assuming minority-owned businesses are inherently disadvantaged breaches the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Vote No on The Restrict Act

I am learning about SB 686 -- The Restrict Act -- the so-called "Tiktok" Act. Remember the abuses of the Patriot Act that was passed to make us feel safe and secure? The Patriot Act was supposed to protect us against foreign agents wishing to do us harm but ended up being used against its citizens and to take down a duly elected President. The RESTRICT Act’s vague and overbroad language is a threat to a free and open internet.

Candidates for the “Term Limits” Campaign Posters

The frequent efforts concerning “Term Limits” at the national level are centered on the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Term limits could, and perhaps should, be considered for state legislators and locally elected government officials as well. The President of the United States is limited to two terms by the XXII Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and many states have various limits concerning their Governors.

My Statement on Biden’s State of the Union Address

President Biden’s State of the Union address tonight highlighted how out of touch he is with the reality facing Americans. Under this administration, we have seen record-breaking gas prices, a historic border crisis, 40-year high inflation rates, and a weakened national security. No matter how the president attempts to spin it, the truth is that Americans are worse off because of his policies.

Gov. Evers Vetoes Tax Cuts Again

Last Friday, Governor Evers vetoed for the third time bills that would cut middle-class taxes, expand the married couple tax credit, and give retirees an incentive to stay in Wisconsin rather than leave the state. The Republican-majority state legislature passed the bills last month, in part, as an effort to deal with the nearly $4 billion surplus of taxpayer monies accumulated over the last several years.

Very nearly now, it has been 3 years that doubt has been cast upon the word: woman. I had spent 83 years of knowing what one was. Yet, the last candidate for a seat on the Supreme Court was unwilling to define the word to Senator Blackburn in a hearing - even though she has first hand knowledge. It is almost exactly 2 years since a man, identifying as a woman, won an NCAA woman's champion swimming title. And, it's almost a year since a 'trans influencer' took Bud Lite into serious brewery layoffs.

Call for federal funds following structural failure of Lansing Bridge

Yesterday, I, along with Ashley Hinson (IA-02), sent a letter to Federal Highway Administration Administrator Shailen Bhatt emphasizing Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds’ (IA-R) request for federal emergency relief funding for the repair of the Lansing Bridge in Lansing, Iowa. This request comes after the bridge, which connects Iowa Highway 9 and Wisconsin Highway 35, was closed due to a sudden structural failure that deemed it unsafe for traffic use. The bridge serves as a key route between Allamakee and Clayton Counties in Iowa and Crawford and Vernon Counties in Wisconsin.

Busy Week with Visitors at the Capitol

It was a busy week in Madison as many visitors from the 24th Senate District came to the state Capitol for various activities.

Local members of the Wisconsin Tavern League had their annual advocacy day, and we sat down to discuss transportation issues and programs that ensure bar patrons can get home safely.

Monroe County Sheriff Wesley D. Revels also was in town for a Badger State Sheriffs' Association conference, and he visited the Capitol to share his priorities related to public safety.

SEN Baldwin -- Where have you been?

--- Open Letter to Senator Tammy Baldwin ---
It must be an election year.

I just read a story that says you are all of a sudden concerned about fentanyl pouring across the Southern border and killing hundreds of thousands of young Americans.

Illegal immigration is out of control.

Millions are crossing our border every year. They are sucking up very finite resources while our own citizens go without.

Have you looked at the homeless crisis in America? Do you see our cities being overwhelmed by undocumented immigrants with no end in sight?
