A Hands-On Hire Howard

This May, I was “hired” by a local business and a support agency in the 17th Senate District. “Hire Howard” is a program where I job shadow a local organization, to get hands-on experience and learn about the challenges and opportunities they face.

First, I worked a shift at Johnson’s One Stop in Seneca. Operated by third-generation owners Artie and Debbie Johnson, the business has served the community since 1937 and is truly a “one-stop” store. Johnson’s has everything from a full-service grocery store, to hardware and paint, building supplies, power equipment, and more.

The store is a family-owned and operated. Artie’s brother Brad and sons Brandon, Jordan, and Thomas, all work at the store too. Their fantastic work was recently recognized when Artie and Debbie were named Wisconsin Small Business Persons of the Year by the Small Business Association and honored in Washington, DC.

My day began helping Jordan make mushroom and Swiss brats for the store’s summer brat sale. I was amazed by the variety of homemade brats the store makes. Jordan walked me through the process and I was able to try twisting the links together myself. I was very glad that I had some prior brat-making experience on my resume!

Next, I spent time in the small engine repair shop assembling a brand-new riding lawnmower for a customer. We put it together, ensured everything was properly installed, and took it for a short test drive. I finished the day stocking shelves in the hardware department. This job required great attention to detail to ensure the barcode and product numbers match and that items are correctly sorted.

The selection of products and level of service Johnson’s provides to the greater Crawford County community is unique and invaluable. It was a pleasure to work for them.

Later in the month, I volunteered with the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) of Iowa County to serve meals through its “Senior Nutrition Program.”

I helped prepare lunches for delivery to seniors who are homebound or lack reliable access to food. The meals we served included a breaded chicken breast, mashed potatoes, fresh fruit, and milk. The ADRC packages roughly 1,300 meals each month for residents across the county.

After packaging lunches, we served “congregate meals” to those who came to Hidden Valley Community Church. These gatherings serve about 100 people each month, and give seniors a chance to enjoy a warm meal, catch up with neighbors, play cards, and spend time together.

I was very impressed by the team of volunteers who make programs like thispossible. From cooks and servers to delivery drivers, over 60 volunteers generously donate their time to support their community.

In all my years doing “Hire Howard,” this was the first time I volunteered with a community service organization. Seeing the operation up close gave me a new appreciation for the important work our ADRCs do every day.
