WI Assembly Passes Local Government Funding Plan

On Wednesday, Assembly Republicans passed an historic shared revenue deal to assist our local governments in paying higher costs and to keep local property taxes lower for taxpayers.

To help with costs, all communities, other than Milwaukee, will have a guaranteed 15% increase and will now be tied to a dedicated funding source to ensure future increases. This new aid can only be used for law enforcement, fire protection, EMS, emergency response communications, public works, transportation and courts. But we don’t want to just send new money without encouraging innovation. Which is why our plan use some of the state’s budget surplus to create an innovation fund that will monetarily incentivize local governments to find smarter ways to do the business by consolidating and sharing services.

The bill passed out of the Assembly by a vote of 56-36. Three Republicans joined all Democrats in voting against the plan. It now heads to the state Senate for a vote.
