Make a Local Farm Your Fall Destination
From apple picking to corn mazes and pumpkin patches, autumn is when agritourism truly shines. This growing sector connects visitors to working farms and rural communities through hands-on experiences that highlight the farm, the people, and the food we rely on. Agritourism includes any activity that welcomes the public to visit, learn, and enjoy farm life, all while supporting local agriculture. The industry has become a major economic driver, generating more than $1 billion in additional revenue for American farms.
In Wisconsin’s 17th Senate District, we are fortunate to have some of the best agritourism destinations in the state. From the beautiful apple orchards in Gays Mills to Vesperman Farms in Lancaster and charming experiences where you can stay on a farm throughout Green County, these places offer more than just a fun afternoon, they offer a chance to learn more about where our food comes from.
Visitors to our part of the state can hike through gorgeous landscapes, pick their own produce, or enjoy fresh vegetables and baked goods at farmers markets. Many of the farms that can be visited are fully functioning family farms that have found innovative ways to diversify. Hosting events, shuttling visitors to pick their own produce, or offering a bed and breakfast is the perfect way to help them weather the unpredictability of commodity prices.
Agritourism also plays an important role in education. For those unfamiliar with farming, these experiences offer a rare opportunity to see firsthand how food is grown and harvested. Whether you have a child picking pumpkins for the first time or a family exploring a corn maze, these visits build appreciation of the agriculture industry for people from all walks of life.
And yes, that apple you pick for yourself at 1913 Kickapoo Orchard may cost a little more than the one from the grocery store, but it comes with an experience. A memory made with a loved one or a greater understanding for how that food gets to your house.
This autumn, enjoy a new experience at one of the many agritourism businesses in our local communities! For a full list of Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association members and a calendar of events, visit https://wiagtourism.com/.
