The new legislative session officially began on Monday, January 6 with the inauguration of our new members of the legislature. As the activity in the Capitol ramps up, I wanted to give you a preview of what this session may hold.

I am grateful that I have again been chosen to serve as the Senate co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance and lead work on the state budget. I will also be returning for another session on the Senate Committee on Agriculture & Revenue as well as the Joint Legislative Audit Committee. These roles are a great fit for me based on my background and I cannot wait to get to work on these important issues!

Over the next two years it is my top priority to continue to provide excellent constituent service. Whether you call, email, write, visit the Capitol, or see me at a community event, you will be served in a meaningful way. My team will work hard to answer your questions, connect you with state agencies, and clear roadblocks. My office is always here to collect your input and record your ideas.

My primary focus in the Capitol during the first half of 2025 will be on crafting a fiscally responsible state budget that funds our shared priorities, protects the state’s checkbook, and addresses cost of living concerns. The budget process will formally begin with the Governor’s budget address on February 18th at 7:00 p.m. I look forward to using this column to keep you informed about the budget process throughout the spring.

In addition to the state budget, I am committed to working on legislation that makes a difference. This session I plan on bringing back some bills that did not make it through the legislative process last cycle, as well as introducing new legislation, much of which is requested and initiated by residents of the 17th Senate District.

Throughout this session I look forward to hearing from you! One of the most rewarding aspects of being a legislator is participating in “lobby days”. On these days, advocacy groups will bring in members from around the state to share their legislative priorities and ideas for legislation on a wide variety of topics. These lobby days allow me to meet with constituents who have personal experience and expertise in fields such as healthcare, libraries, agriculture, and everything in between.

In addition to these advocacy days, I will be hosting listening sessions throughout the 17th Senate District in the coming weeks. These sessions are a great opportunity to hear input, opinions, and ideas directly from you. If you cannot make it to a listening session, you can always contact my team at the State Capitol directly.

I look forward to all this session holds: working on meaningful legislation, writing a responsible state budget, and providing top notch constituent service. As always, if you need assistance with any state-related matters, please call our team at the State Capitol – 608-266-0703 – or email me – Sen.Marklein@legis.wisconsin.gov.
