Working with Both Parties to Get Results

One of the most common questions I hear when I am out and about is: What have you done to work with the other side of the political aisle? I am happy to report that I have a proven track record of working with both parties to get results that benefit people across the 17th Senate District and Wisconsin.

Over the last four years, I have successfully authored 38 bills that have become law. Every single bill I authored received bipartisan support during the legislative process before it was signed by the Governor. In fact, since 2019 all 68 of the bills that I have authored that became law received bipartisan support in the Legislature. I have worked across the aisle to support our local EMS and fire departments, ensure reliable access to broadband, upgrade and repair our roads and bridges, support mental health services closer to home, protect victims of sexual assault, update and modernize our tax code, and more.

In addition, during my time as Co-Chair of the Joint Finance Committee (JFC), I have a history of building bipartisan budgets. In fact, the 2021-2023 budget was the first bipartisan budget since 2007 and received 87 total "yes" votes between the Assembly and the Senate, the most since 2001. In the most recent state budget, we spent months negotiating with Governor Evers and agreed to a budget that cut taxes, provided historic increases for K-12 special education funding, and invested in our local hospitals and clinics.

Although I remain disappointed we did not pass a bipartisan deal this spring to return some of the surplus to you, eliminate income taxes on overtime and tips, increase K-12 special education funding, and cut property taxes, I am proud to have worked with Governor Evers to develop this plan.

In addition to the legislation I authored, I was pleased that Democrats and Republicans worked together to expand healthcare coverage for new mothers up to one year postpartum, provide funding to address PFAS contamination in the water, while protecting innocent farmers, and ban cell phone use by students during the school day.

While the issues that may get the most attention are those that divide us, I am proud to have a proven track record of working together with both parties to find common ground and get results.
