Expiration of Knowles-Nelson
The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program – which was created by the Wisconsin State Legislature in 1989 to preserve natural parcels of land, protect water quality and expand outdoor recreational opportunities – expired last week after 37 years of existence.
In response, some legislators have been making misleading allegations about why Knowles-Nelson has come to an end.
Because of that misinformation, I thought it would be beneficial to pen a column explaining the real reason behind the demise of the stewardship program.

I will skip the political correctness
This program has been abused; once the money was there, it became a target for many pet projects. It also takes private land off the tax roles that causes all of our property taxes to go up. The government does not need any more land or parks; let the private sector do what is best for the land, but keep it on the tax rolls.
